Blog 12..

*Have you met anyone new who is important to you? Have you rekindled any old friendships that have made you stronger?
I have met a few people this semester that have become pretty important to me and I hope to continue to be friends with them for a while. And I have also gotten closer to some people that i went to highschool with, and never would have thought we'd be as close as we are.
*Have you experienced any major changes academically or personally?
Academically I have experienced changes about my studying habits, they've gotten a little bit better but not much, also my grades have gotten a little lower than they were in highschool, but that was expected.
*What is your one BEST or FAVORITE memory of this semester?
One of my favorite memories is going ice skating, it was really fun to hangout with people outside of the classroom setting. It would have been even more enjoyable if everyone would have participated, but that's really far-fetched. :)
*How will you live your life to the fullest?
I try living my life to the fullest by doing something courageous or spontaneous each day. I don't like doing the same thing over and over so I try many different things and go out and do things i'm not familiar with.

“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” –Stephen Covey

1) Reflect upon what you read in Chapter 11 of Thriving in College. What does this quote mean to you or how can you apply it to your life?
Chapter 11 is mainly about relating to people and using communication such as, remembering people's names to increase your relationship with them. This quote relates quite well to chapter 11 because i interpret it as, if you want someone to listen to you, you need to listen to them as well. People usually aren't going to like it if you just come to them with your problems and leave after they give you advice, you need to be a friend to have a friend.

2) (Refer to page 380 of the text): Are you a “Crisis Tickler,” “Withholder,” “Irritator,” “Blamer,” or “Gunnysacker?” Explain.

I think i'm more of a crisis tickler because if something is bothering me i really don't like to bring it up bluntly. I hint at things but don't say them right out, which is mainly because i don't want to start a confrontation.

Blog 10!

"Who are the people in your life that you tend to turn to for social support when you are experiencing stress or need personal encouragement?"

I have different people I turn to for different things. Usually it's my mom, we are really close, and that makes me extremely happy because some people tend to lose interest in being bff's with their mom's, but that deffinately isn't me. I turn to my mom for almost anything, whether it's school, boy trouble, friend trouble, or hockey, she is always there for me and gives it her best shot to help me feel better. If my mom isn't around, I look to my bestfriend Carrie, she truely is the best friend I've ever had, she's always there for me and she is really insightful, we met in 6th grade when I moved back to Marquette, she was there for me from the beginning, and the best thing is we have mostly all the same interests, she's been on my hockey team ever since I started, and she helps me succeed in that as well as in school, she's a great teacher and whenever I need her she's there. There are many more people I turn to if those two aren't available, but usually Carrie is the one who helps me through tough situations. Right now she's helping me cope with school and we planned it out so we are in some of the same classes for next semester, so that should help me stride to be better, because we like to compete. :)

1) What are you most stressed-out with at the moment? Why? Is your body re-acting to this stress? Devise a plan to deal with it.
I'm really stressed about all of my final exams and how i'm going to pass all of my classes. My body feels like it isn't responding well and i'm over-tired and don't know what to do. I'm going to try to leave time fo all of my studying and of course sleep!
2) FFN: Chapter 8 / This is a creative writing exercise! Read the following scenario and finish it based on your knowledge after reading Chapter 8.
You are "Raul" and have just immigrated to the American West illegally from Mexico. You brought your wife and two young children with you on a frightening and expensive 4-day journey in the back of a beat-up truck to arrive in Texas. You can't find work there and Border Patrol is cracking down, so you decide to migrate north a bit where you have relatives in Colorado. You are hired on the spot by ConAgra to work in one of their "beef processing" plants.

-Describe in sensory detail your place of employment. (What's it look like, what is going on, how do people act, what do you wear, what is your job? etc..)
Everyone in this factory seem gloomy, and they aren't friendly at all. Everyday i come to work i wear boots, a meat coat and a bunch of metal sheets so the equiptment doesn't hurt me. It is very unsanitary and there is blood everywhere, my duty is to knock the cattle out by shooting them, it is very disturbing, but it's what my job entails and i get paid for it.
-How much $$$ do you earn?
My wage is around 30,000 dollars plus any bonuses i might earn.
-How do your days go? What are your work hours and what do you do after work?
My days are very long, i work a full 8 hour day that drains the life right out of me. After work i come home, eat and go to bed, because this is all i can manage.
-Where do you live, what do you live in, how is your quality of life?
I live in a small house with my family. The quality of my life isn't much worse than it was back in Mexico, actually i feel that it is better than my life back in Mexico, i can provide more for my family, i just wish i could spend more time with them.

Number 8!

What is your main drive to succeed in college and why?

My main drive to succeed is that i want to make something of myself, and actually get a college education. I have many people who want to see me succeed and i don't want to let them, or myself down.

Do you think you might switch your major?

I really don't want to switch my major, but if i don't get into the School Of Radiology I might be forced to.

1) Post your favorite lyrics, poem, or quote for this week.
Na Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na Na Na
NaNa Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
I guess i just lost my husband
I don't know where he went
So i'm gonna drink my money
I'm not gonna pay his rent (Nope)
I got a brand new attitude
And i'm gonna wear it tonight
I wanna get in trouble
I wanna start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
I wanna start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
I wanna start a fight
So so what?
I'm still a rock star
I got my rock moves
And i don't need you
And guess what
I'm having more fun
And now that we're done
I'm gonna show you tonight
I'm alright, I'm just fine
And you're a tool
So so what?
I am a rockstar
I got my rock moves
And i don't want you tonight
Uh, check my flow, uh
The waiter just took my table
And gave to Jessica Simp- Shit!
I guess i'll go sit with drum boy
At least he'll know how to hit
What if this song's on the radio
Then somebody's gonna die
I'm gonna get in trouble
My ex will start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
He's gonna start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
We're all gonna get in a fight!
So so what?
I'm still a rock starI got my rock moves
And i don't need you
And guess whatI'm having more fun
And now that we're done
I'm gonna show you tonight
I'm alright, I'm just fine
And you're a tool
So so what?
I am a rock starI got my rock moves
And i don't want you tonight
You weren't thereYou never were
You want it all
But thats not fair
I gave you love
I gave my all
You weren't thereYou let me fall
So so what?
I'm still a rock starI got my rock moves
And i don't need youAnd guess whatI'm having more fun
And now that we're done (we're done)
I'm gonna show you tonightI'm alright(I'm alright),I'm just fine (I'm just fine)
And you're a tool
So so what?
I am a rock starI got my rock moves
And i don't want you tonightNo No, No NoI
Don't want you tonight
You weren't thereI'm gonna show you tonightI'm alright, I'm just fine
And you're a tool
So so what?
I am a rock starI got my rock moves
And i don't want you tonight

2) Develop two reflection questions that you would ask your students at this point in the course if you were a UN100 Professor.
What have you learned so far this semester?
When moving on after this semester, what do you want to take with you?
3) What are you passionate about? Why?
Call me a tomboy or whatever, but i'm really passionate about sports. They keep my mind off of things that are going wrong, and let me burn of some steam. I love playing hockey because it makes me feel better about myself.
4) How are you going to finance your three years of the Radiology program? If you will be in debt from student loans at the end, calculate roughly how much you will owe upon graduation.
I'm going to have many student loans. hah. Roughly i will probably owe around $8,500
5) Have you changed your mind or do you have any new concerns about your program of study after our guest speakers today (Dr. Foley & Joanne)? Are you thinking of a different major or are you dead set on Radiology? What behavior(s) will you maybe have to change in order to keep up with and make the cut?
I'm not going to lie, they did scare me and really make me think if that's what i want to do, but it seems so interesting and enjoyable that i have to continue on with it. I need to get a better grade in anatomy to make the cut, that's for sure.
6) FAST FOOD NATION (You should be reading through Chapter 7 at this point)
Reflect upon the opening lines of Chapter 7:"You can smell Greeley, Colorado, long before you can see it. The smell is hard to forget but not easy to describe, a combination of live animals, manure, and dead animals being rendered into dog food."
Gross! This is one of the most disturbing things I've read in a long time. I would hate even driving by that place, how could people actually live there?
-Have you ever read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair?
I don't think so.
If so, how does it relate to FFN?-
How high is the employee turnover rate in the meat industry and why don't the packing plants see this as a problem?
The Greely place rate is around 80%. And I think that packing plants dont care about this because the tasks that the workers are doing don't really rely on any skills, so they could just find another person in a hurry.
To supply the beef slaughterhouse, ConAgra operates a pair of enormous feedlots. Each of them can hold up to one hundred thousand head of cattle..During the three months before slaughter, they eat grain..The grain fattens the cattle quickly, aided by the anabolic steroids implanted in their ear."
Can you say cruel and unusual!? This is so disturbing, not only is it hurting the animals, but it's hurting the people that consume it, this can't be healty for us and it's definately not healthy for the animals.
-Do you think that these animals' emotions (fears, stress, anger) affect the meat we eat derived from them? How? -
I think that it probably does have an affect on the meat because if a animal is stressed, it's more likely not to eat (even though who wouldn't want to eat what they are giving them), and it would cause them to be very small.
How do you feel about eating steroids via consumption of "USDA Inspected" beef?
Discusted! If i'm going to be eating meat, i want the real deal, not like fake, chemically enhanced crap.

Number six!

Reflect upon one tactic we discussed in class this week concerning Procrastination, Study Habits, Retainment, or Test-Taking/Anxiety. (Choose something that you will probably try and discuss why).
While in class today talking about procrastination, study habits, retainment and test-taking was actually quite interesting. Personally I need to focus on my study habits, retaining information and my anxiety. In class when we presented what to do while studying I learned that studying everything all at once isn't such a good idea, I need to start taking breaks in between subjects every half hour or hour. I also realize that I should probably review my notes the day I take them rather than a week or two after, because that isn't really helping my situation. Hopefully after this weeks class I should be able to take better notes and study them better. :)
