Number 4!

Ø What is your plan to get involved on campus? What are your interests? Will you or have you joined any student organizations? Which two events besides UNITED & Career Major Fair do you plan on attending?
To get involved i plan on going to some of the student activities such as going to the movies in Jamrich or the certain guests that come to visit NMU like a comedian, hypnotist, etc. I also enjoy hockey so i will be going to most of those games, but i don't think i will be joining any clubs just yet. I want to try to stay focused on my schoolwork before i go and get myself into something else.
Ø Fast Food Nation - Chapter 6:

Ø What are some of the problems facing cattle ranchers?
Cattle ranchers make very little money for what they do. And really only four meat packing places make up eighty-something percent of the nations cattle production.

Ø What are “captive supplies” of cattle? (“The four major meatpacking companies now control about 20 percent of the live cattle in the U.S. through ‘captive supplies’” (138). (See also p. 142).
Captive supplies can be two different things, they can be purchased or they can be maintained in company owned feedlots.
Ø What was the impact of the Chicken McNugget on the poultry industry?
The chicken mcnugget had a huge impact on the poultry industry. Most poultry was sold by the whole and then once the mcnugget came along the chicken has been being sold in different parts instead of by the whole.
Ø How does the nutritional value of a McNugget compare to a hamburger?
The nugget has twice as much fat per ounce as the hamburger.
Ø How does the suicide rate for ranchers and farmers compare with the rate for U.S. citizens in general? Why?
Three times the rate, because they are under a lot of stress from the demanding life of a rancher.
Ø Do you feel as if there is any healthy fast food available to consumers? If so, where and why? Give specific examples of products.. Please be honest and support your opinions. For example, I feel that Subway's Veggie Sub is extremely healthy due to its freshly-cut produce, cheese, and fresh-baked breads. I actually talked to a friend who works at Subway and he said in MQT, they slice their own produce. (My fear was that it arrived pre-sliced and filled with preservatives). It's not organic, but it's a start.
I believe that some pasta shops or sub places could be healthy, but then again you don't know if every place has freshly cut veggies. But if there are freshly cut veggies then i think that those kind of places are pretty healthy.

Blog number 3!

Ø Describe your ideal Instructor/Professor.
My ideal instructor would be someone who tries to make the lesson more interesting by relating things to real life, or taking us on field trips or something along those lines.
Ø “I knew it when I studied it, but I forgot it on the test.” How can students study differently to prevent this from happening?
Make flashcards or use highlighters on your notes so it catches your attention
Ø How do you study for quizzes/tests?
I usually study my notes, and sometimes i make flashcards, mostly i just try to memorize everything
Ø What do you have trouble with on quizzes/tests?
I have a hard time understanding what the question is asking, and especially when it is a multiple choice quiz or test that all the answers are right but there is only one that completely fits the situation.
*Please go to the website listed below, which is a "Letter to McDonald's" from a former employee. Read it and write at least a paragraph reaction on your Blog site.http://www.aboutmyjob.com/main.php3?action=displayarticle&artid=3141
This letter made me somewhat feel bad for the man who used to work there but then i didn't feel bad for him. McDonalds to me looks like a horrible place to work, the people there don't care, and it's dirty, very dirty. So why in the first place even if he hated his job would he go and get a job at a fast food restaurant, i realize that his job before wasn't the greatest but it still make me wonder. As for the other employees and managers there, i think they took complete advantage over him, he said he could only open one, two times at most a week and he said he was opening almost everyday, this seem ridiculous. McDonalds seems to be very unfair.

Blog number two

Ø Reiterate a term or concept you learned in Anatomy this week.
One of the terms I learned in anatomy this week was Melanocyte
Ø List a few pleasant events that happened during your first weeks at NMU.
Well some events that I noticed were going on were, the football and soccer games, all the sorrorities are rushing so they are all trying to get you to join their house and that was kind of intertaining and lastly we had this lady from New Zealand come in and she was nuts!
Ø Where do you want to be (academically) in six months?
I would like to have passed all my classes and earn atleast a 3.0 GPA
Ø List habits you already possess that make you successful in college.
I try to do the homework assigned right after that class just so I don't have to worry about it later. I also think that my note taking isn't too bad.
Ø List habits (timewasters?) you can change or modify, or need to lose.
I need to cut back on texting and using the computer for things other than school
Ø Explain how you approach studying your a) textbook and b) notes.
I just try to write down key points in my notebook so that i can still pay attention to what the professor is saying. With my textbook i mainly try to concentrate on the boldfaced or italic words.
Ø Explain how you determine what to write down in notes during lectures.
I listen for different tones in the professors voice, like Dr. Froiland, he repeats himself so i know that i need to write what he just said down.
Ø FAST FOOD NATION:
Ø Watch this short 1980’s McDonald’s commercial. McD’s reps have actually claimed they do not target children in their ads.. Pay attention to the tagline: “The Hamburglar is very clever and very sneaky!” Why is this ironic?
This is ironic to me because this commercial is setup in the classroom, who goes to school? kids, and also i think it's funny that ronald says the hamburglar is sneaky when really mcdonalds is sneaky because they don't tell you what goes in your food.
Ø Over the last several decades, fast food companies have aggressively targeted children in their marketing efforts. Should advertisers be permitted to target children who lack the sophistication to make informed decisions and are essentially being lured into eating high fat, high calorie food through toys and cute corporate mascots?
I don't think they should do it, but i don't see how they can be told that they aren't allowed to give away toys in their meals.

First Blog!!! :)

Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today.
The song that is grabbing my attention today is Change, by Taylor Swift. This is because I feel like i'm getting overwhelmed with work but the more I study and try, the better the outcome will be.

Ø Now that you made it to NMU – why are you here?
The reason I am at NMU is because it has the program I want to be in and it's very close to home. It is also one of the more affordable choices.

Ø How did you choose this school?
This school was very easy to choose because I've passed by it countless times and it was always available.

Ø List initial observations of your new environment.
I've noticed that NMU is really big, and not like my highschool at all even though they are within a block of eachother. The thing that shocks me the most are all the people, there are so many!!!

Ø List initial observations of your classes.
My classes are very hard, i never knew a professor could teach so many students at once! It's also interesting that everyone knows exactly what to write down even though the professors just babble on and on.

Ø What observations have you made about other students?
I've noticed that some of the students look so in the loop. They know exactly what they are doing, which is very strange because then I notice myself and other freshman that look totally lost.

Ø About your instructors?
Oh the instructors! They are crazy! I never have met so many teachers that all they do is just talk all hour! I honestly don't think they really care if each student does well or not, because they gegt payed no matter what, but I guess it's just something I'll have to get used to seeings how I'll be here for a while!!!

Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester?
I think my biggest challenge will be studying, in highschool we got little study guides for each test or quiz, here it's just like, okay study everything I've told you in the last few sessions.

Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week.
One goal I would like to accomplish by next week is to take school more seriously, I need to really pay attention in class and focus more on what my professors are tellking me.
