First Blog!!! :)

Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today.
The song that is grabbing my attention today is Change, by Taylor Swift. This is because I feel like i'm getting overwhelmed with work but the more I study and try, the better the outcome will be.

Ø Now that you made it to NMU – why are you here?
The reason I am at NMU is because it has the program I want to be in and it's very close to home. It is also one of the more affordable choices.

Ø How did you choose this school?
This school was very easy to choose because I've passed by it countless times and it was always available.

Ø List initial observations of your new environment.
I've noticed that NMU is really big, and not like my highschool at all even though they are within a block of eachother. The thing that shocks me the most are all the people, there are so many!!!

Ø List initial observations of your classes.
My classes are very hard, i never knew a professor could teach so many students at once! It's also interesting that everyone knows exactly what to write down even though the professors just babble on and on.

Ø What observations have you made about other students?
I've noticed that some of the students look so in the loop. They know exactly what they are doing, which is very strange because then I notice myself and other freshman that look totally lost.

Ø About your instructors?
Oh the instructors! They are crazy! I never have met so many teachers that all they do is just talk all hour! I honestly don't think they really care if each student does well or not, because they gegt payed no matter what, but I guess it's just something I'll have to get used to seeings how I'll be here for a while!!!

Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester?
I think my biggest challenge will be studying, in highschool we got little study guides for each test or quiz, here it's just like, okay study everything I've told you in the last few sessions.

Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week.
One goal I would like to accomplish by next week is to take school more seriously, I need to really pay attention in class and focus more on what my professors are tellking me.

Hehe- Yes, college is all about Professors (who are specialists in their fields) lecturing all hour. There isn't much discussion or time for students themselves to talk, mostly because there is so much material to get through and office hours are when Profs will talk with you. It is difficult to determine what to copy down in lecture notes and what not to, so we'll focus on that in class.
I like to think that Profs care whether you pass or fail but they don't actually have to care, which is a huge difference from HS. Good job!

On the profs not caring...from my perspective (already having crashed out of college, spent 6 years as a townie, and going back into the loop), it's kinda like this:

In high school, your teachers are both instructors of the subject and personal counselors - they have to take the time to individually nurture each and every student to his needs and abilities. The teacher has to feed the smart kid enough to keep his attention satisfied; he also has to keep the ADD kid on track, the dumb kid entertained and the gaggle of six teenage girls focused on the subject at hand and not the New Kids on the Block (oh yeah, they're back...not really).

In high school, you're a kid and are treated as one. In college, you're still a kid (and you'll be a kid pretty much until you're 23 if you're a guy, or 21 if you're a girl), but you're treated as an adult - after all, you can smoke, rent porn and vote, so what's to stop you from paying attention in class too?

The professor's main job is to profess - that is, lecture - and nothing else.

In high school, whether you pass or fail was directly affected by your teacher's effort or lack thereof. In college, whether you pass or fail is entirely your prerogative and if you fuck up, it's all on you.

Oh yeah, and the best part? High school is free. College, you PAY for, whether you graduate or not. Believe me, I'm still paying on the last one (well, not currently due to loan deferments but I still owe about $600 on my last trip to school 7 yr ago).

But just stick with it darling, you'll do just fine. ^_^

Oh, well that's basically what Mme. Simon said, in so many words. My bad.
